Part Three: Discipline

The third part is the one that is most commonly assigned to students and that occasional or second-hand readers of Discipline and Punish are familiar with. It is the source for many of Foucault’s most quoted terms and phrases. While it is the chapter that you may find yourself returning to re-read often, it is advisable to do so only with careful attention to the Parts before and after it. Part Four is especially important, since it is there that Foucault explains the purpose of most of the techniques he describes in Part Three.
